Newport Beach police arrested a 26-year-old Costa Mesa man Tuesday
morning on suspicion of hitting another man on the head with the vehicle
anti-theft device The Club.
Dung Minh Le was fishing on Newport Pier with a companion about 7:30
a.m. when another group of three people were also fishing at the pier,
said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.
Le reportedly told the group not to overhead cast at the pier, which
led one man to pull out a knife. Shulman said Le then left with his
companion and returned alone with The Club and hit the knife-wielding man
on the back of his head. The man suffered a cut to his head and refused
treatment, Shulman said. The injured man was not identified, he said.
Also, the injured man was not arrested because there was insufficient
evidence to prove he pulled out a knife, Shulman said. Le was charged
with assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held in Newport Beach jail
with bail set at $10,000.
