A Garden Grove man was arrested on charges of allegedly assaulting a
police officer with a deadly weapon -- a car.
Police arrested Jose Hernandez, 20, Sunday on suspicion of dragging
Officer Kristin Innis 40 feet from the driver’s seat of a beige 1997
Toyota Camry.
Lt. Bruce Kelly of the Huntington Beach Police Department, said Innis
and another patrolman attempted to stop the vehicle, which carried three
juvenile passengers, on Main Street, near the intersection of Pacific
Coast Highway, at about 3:53 p.m. when the incident occurred.
“When [Innis] made contact with the driver, he ultimately grabbed the
officer’s arm and accelerated away from the intersection,” Kelly said.
The vehicle fled as Innis broke the grip on her arm, but was caught by
police a short time later, when Hernandez was taken into custody, police
said, adding that the juveniles were also apprehended after a brief foot
pursuit.
Hernandez was booked at the city’s jail, with bail set at $50,000.
Innis, who is assigned to the foot beat in the Downtown area, was
injured in the assault, but the injuries were not life threatening, Kelly
said.
She was taken to Hoag Hospital, where she was treated and released
that day.
Police are asking any witnesses of the attack to call the detective
bureau at (714) 375-5066 or (714) 536-5951.
