Heather Miller, 7, and her cat, Ruby, won best in show for softest fur
in the Pampered Pet Contest at the 22nd annual Youth Expo in April at the
Orange County Fair & Exposition Center . . . The following Girl Scouts
recently earned gold awards: Jodi Jones, Sarah Lilly and Laura Mazurk,
Solo Troop; Julia Raia, Troop 607; Stephanie Dailey, Stephanie Dodge,
Holly Edwards, Kathryn Haynes, Britton Klein, Kristen Klueger, Kristin
Maberry, Joanne Matulich, Jennifer Pawson, Kimi Porter, Christy Slanaker,
Katherine Thompson and Joni Winstein, Troop 859; Beatriz Espinosa, Alexis
Hickox, Heidi Haubrich, Angelise Marcigilano and Lauren Parks, Troop 1178
. . . Marine View Middle School music teacher Lynn Silver was selected
as Orange County Arts Educator of the Year for secondary vocal music.
Orange County Music and Arts Administrators annually recognize the
accomplishments of arts educators and their administrators. Silver
directs the music program at Marine View which includes vocal music,
choir and an award-winning jazz ensemble . . . Marine Corps Pvt. Trung Q.
Nguyen completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San
Diego. Nguyen successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to
challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. He is the son
of Thu and Quang Nguyen . . . Air Force Airman Alan V. Salmones graduated
from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio,
Texas. He is the son of Victor and Maria Salmones.
