Daily Pilot Cup: Can’t stop Carden Hall’s stars

Steve Virgen

COSTA MESA - Mike Bernay, the coach of Carden Hall’s girls third-

and fourth-grade soccer team, said he was a bit worried a month before

the Daily Pilot Cup began.

“We had to pray to get 12 players to come out for us,” Bernay said.

Carden Hall found its players and they found the net, early and often,

in an 8-0 victory over Mariners Friday at The Farm Complex.

Lauren Draganza scored five goals, three in the second half, while

Kristi Jacobs, Gillian Hogan and Christina O’Tousa added one goal each.

Bernay’s prayers were answered in more ways than one. Not only did

Carden Hall get its team, but Bernay said, the squad features four club

soccer players and three others who are AYSO all-stars.

Carden Hall displayed its talent from the outset. After Draganza

nearly scored on a breakaway, Jacobs stole the ball when Mariners

attempted to clear out the threat. Jacobs then started the scoring run

with a shot from about 25 yards out. Draganza scored twice before

halftime.

Mariners, coached by Park Eddy, did not show defeat with its efforts.

Michelle Loubet still came up with some key saves when she played goalie,

while Hanna McCloud, Charlotte Farrell and Holly Lyons provided some

scoring opportunities for Mariners.

Carden Hall’s talent, however, appeared to be too much. Draganza never

eased up on her attack and Alexa Levin, Claire Layton, Kelly Matthews and

Caroline Hardenbergh contributed. Lauren Wilbur, Maggie Bernay, Julie

Hassman, Spencer South and Sydney Sweeny also provided aggressive defense

which produced the shutout.

In another girls third- and fourth-grade Daily Pilot Cup game,

California shut out Eastbluff, 7-0. Jenna Tanner scored three goals,

while Mariah Bailey and Jeana de Arakal added two each.
