A bank robber who claimed to have dropped off a bag with a bomb at a
Newport Beach Wells Fargo branch Tuesday got away with $25,521, according
to a police report.
The bomb scare closed off a portion West Coast Highway for more than
90 minutes Tuesday afternoon. Employees in the bank and adjacent
businesses also were evacuated until the Orange County Sheriff’s
Department bomb squad inspected the small, black sports bag.
According to the report, the bag contained a white towel and a
portable radio that was 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. He reportedly
threatened tellers with the bag, which he said contained the bomb, then
jumped over the counter and took money from four teller stations.
Police and the FBI are still looking for the robber. Anyone with
information is asked to call (800) 550-6273.
