‘DEAR RON’ LETTERS

Since it appears that the library should show a profit why not charge

book rentals like Blockbuster (“A tale of good and evil at the Huntington

Beach Playhouse,” May 3)?

It was my impression that the “new” library was built with a theater

to accommodate the playhouse. As one of those “soon to be” seniors living

on a fixed income, I treasure the playhouse as a reasonable alternative

to South Coast expensive theater.

In answer to Ron Davis’ column, I think he has miscast his

characters. Ron Hayden of the Huntington Beach Library is attempting to

do a job. While I commend him for the work that he is trying to do, I

condemn the way he is trying to do it. The Huntington Beach Playhouse

was to be part of the library and cultural center. Cultural centers are a

benefit to all communities, and almost never profit centers. These

centers are just a small part of the benefits we enjoy as taxpayers.

The Huntington Beach Library and Cultural Center enriches the quality

of life in our community, and it is one of the reasons why so many

families wish to relocate to our city.

If we all felt as Ron Davis (the real Snidely) seems to, we would have

no youth shelter, no Boys & Girls Club, no art center and certainly Surf

City would have no surfing museum. We would have no public parks, no

public swimming pools and our community programs would have to either

make a profit or get out.

As for children, why would we have them? They certainly do not pay

their own way. The answer to all of this is “because we love them.”

In Huntington Beach, “life does have its rewards.”
