Four of the five cast members for South Coast Repertory’s production

of “Kimberly Akimbo” will be making their debut with the theater company.

The play, which premieres April 13, stars Joanna P. Adler, Marylouise

Burke, Ann Dowd, Steven Flynn and John Gallagher Jr. Flynn has worked on

SCR’s stages before.

“Kimberly Akimbo,” an SCR-commissioned comedy by David Lindsay-Abaire,

tells the tale of a teenager who is old beyond her years due to a rare

condition.

The play will preview Friday through April 12 before starting its

regular run April 13 through May 13. Performances will be 8 p.m. Tuesdays

through Fridays, 2:30 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Sundays. Tickets are $18-$49, with a “pay-what-you-will” performance on

April 14.

Lecture to explore new frontier in human genetics

Author Gregory Stock will speak April 20 and 21 on “The Human Genome

Project: A New Frontier” as part of the Newport Beach Library’s 4th

Annual Distinguished Speakers Lecture Series.

Stock, director of UCLA Medical School’s program on technology,

medicine and society, examined the subject of genetic engineering at

length in his 1993 book “Metamen: The Merging of Humans and Machines into

a Global Superorganism.” He is also a senior fellow at the Center for the

Study of Evolution and the Origin of Life.

The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. April 20 and 2 p.m. April 21 at

the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave. Tickets are $55 for

the April 20 program, including dinner, and $18 for the April 21 event.
