Season comes to an end for Smackers
Despite getting a victory and two ties last weekend, the Surf-City
Smackers of AYSO Region 143 saw their season come to an end at the
Section II tournament held at UC Irvine.
The Smackers finished two points behind North Irvine, who won the
final to advance to the Tri-Section tournament.
In their first game, the Smackers and North Irvine fought to a 1-1
tie. Amy Nunez scored on a penalty kick for the Smackers, and halfback
Andrea Gonzalez and goalie Breanna Flynn paced the defense.
On Saturday afternoon, the Smackers rallied from a 3-0 halftime
deficit, to earn a 3-3 tie against Mission Viejo. Nunez scored two goals
and Gonzalez scored the other to lead the comeback.
The Smackers came back on Sunday to blank Tierrasanta, 4-0, behind a
goal by Lindsay Mangan, and a hat trick by Nunez. Flynn and Allison
Dufault controlled the net, and the midfield and backfield defense of
Gonzalez, Jenna Minton, Hayley Lorenz, Missy Murphy, Elizabeth Novotny,
Katie Brewster, Brittany Fuller and Alyssa Jones helped shut down
Tierrasanta.
The Surf-City Smackers, coached by Mike Nunez and Jason Dufault, went
10-1-2 during the regular season, 8-0-3 in postseason play, and outscored
their opponents, 76-21.
