Fountain Valley first at Area All-star tournament

The Fountain Valley 8th-grade boys’ All-star basketball team clinched

first place at last weekend’s National Junior Basketball Area All-star

tournament by defeating Westminster, 62-54.

Westminster led most of the way, but Fountain Valley, behind the play

of center Scott Grant, rallied to take the lead in the final period.

Grant finished the game with 25 points and 19 rebounds. Robert Hansen

came up with 16 points and several key steals and Jeremy Johnson added

nine points, two steals and three blocked shots.

Fountain Valley began the tournament with an 84-35 rout of West

Huntington Beach, behind another top-notch performance by Grant, which

included 30 points and 19 rebounds. Guard Viet Nguyen had 16 points, four

assists and four steals, Hansen scored 10 points and Alexis Chorn scored

eight points.

Fountain Valley downed Long Beach 73-55 in second round play. Nguyen

scored 22 points, Grant had 18 points and another 19-rebound performance,

Johnson scored 14 points with five rebounds and Ahmad Abdelmuti added

eight points.

Fountain Valley, which also consists of Matt Derocili, Chris Debowski,

Derek Kramer, Coach Bruce Kramer and Assistant Coach Dick Bunnell, will

play this weekend in the Sectional All-star tournament.

7TH-GRADE ALL-NET

Fountain Valley No. 2 tops Santa Ana

Fountain Valley No. 2 beat Santa Ana, 54-44, but also dropped a 60-24

game to Moreno Valley and a 62-56 decision to Whittier, in tournament

play last weekend.

In the Santa Ana win, Bryan Bissonette led all scorers with 14 points,

Ben Han scored 12 to go along with 10 rebounds, Sean Carroll scored 13

points and had three assists and Jimmy Flanagan added eight rebounds and

four assists, adding to a season best 12 assists in a single game for

Fountain Valley. Brad Dawson, Adam Czajkowski, Freddy Estrada and John

Kim led a swarming defense that created numerous turnovers and steals,

and Fountain Valley outrebounded Santa Ana, 37-23.

Han had 13 points in the loss to Whittier.

DIVISION II

West wins

West HB 37, Rancho Santa Margarita 21

Courtney Gillespie scored 12 points, Libby DuFresne scored eight

points, Allison Frampton had six rebounds, Raquel Cardellini had three

steals and Alex Hart had four assists as the West Huntington Beach

Shooting Sparks advanced to play at the National tournament March

31-April 1 at The Pyramid at Long Beach State.
