Book fair ends today at school

Today is the last day of Hope View Elementary School’s Scholastic Book

Fair’s “Buy One, Get One Free.”

Students, parents and teachers will find plenty of books and learning

materials.

The fair helps promote learning while raising money for special school

projects. This year’s goal is to increase class libraries and add to the

school library.

The fair is open each day at various times.

The school is at 17622 Flintstone Lane, Huntington Beach.

Concert to help young man with cancer

Edison High School will host a benefit concert from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday

on campus.

The show will benefit freshman Ryan Bates, who was diagnosed with

cancer and continues to battle for his life at CHOC.

Members of Papa Doo Run Run, The Surftones and other bands will play

oldies and surf music. Arkham, The Arrogants, Fat Toby, Flip’n Whiteys

and It’s Time to Rock will play more modern rock.

Other events include a raffle with donations from Madrid Pro Designs,

Hurley and Victory, as well as other prizes such as Beanie Babies,

Easter-themed baskets, beach items, city of Huntington Beach parking

passes, Oakley sunglasses and more.

Papa John’s Pizza will have a food booth and baked goods, fruit,

drinks and other food will be for sale.

There also will be a classic car show in the morning from The Blast

From the Past.

‘Our Town’ final performances set

Golden West College will present the final performance of “Our Town”

this weekend.

The Thornton Wilder play, which depicts life in a small New Hampshire

village at the dawn of the 20th century, is Tom Amen’s directorial debut

on the Mainstage since joining Golden West College late last year.

Produced on a bare stage with minimal props and period costumes, the

play is a hallmark of American Theatre and a haunting exploration of the

life process.

The play will be performed at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a

matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $10.50 general; $8.50 ASB/GWC, Gold Key cardholders and

children under 12.

Golden West College is at 15744 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach.

Parking is recommended using the Center Drive and Gothard Street

Entrance.

The Mainstage Box Office will be open 90 minutes before the

performance or tickets may be reserved by calling (714) 895-8150.

Want a bit in a play by The Bard?

Golden West College is in pre-production of Shakespeare’s “Othello.”

Auditions are scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Mainstage

Theatre, 15744 Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach.

The play, which is being directed by Tom Amen, has many parts still

available. Interested actors need to prepare a two-minute Shakespeare

monologue.

Symphonic band gets in the swing of spring

The Golden West College International Symphonic Band will present

Spring Concert 2001 March 30 and 31 at 8 p.m. at the Mainstage Theatre on

campus, 15744 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach.

The 60-member band, led by maestro Tom Hernandez, will feature many of

the selections it will play on July 4 in front of Pope John Paul II in

Vatican City.

The band will honor an invitation it received from Vatican City and

represent Golden West as well as the city of Huntington Beach on this

historic occasion.

Two years ago, the band was selected as the only musical band to ever

perform at the International Mass in Lourdes, France which had an

audience of more than 28,000.

Since it began in 1966, the troupe has toured around the world,

including Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia and Switzerland.

Admission is $10.50 general; $8.50 ASB/GWC Gold Key cardholders and

children under 12.
