COSTA MESA - The best is yet to come for the Estancia High boys

swim team. This will not be the year for a Pacific Coast League

championship banner, but Eagles’ Coach John Carpenter is optimistic for

the future, when Estancia joins the Golden West League for the spring of

2003.

With eight freshmen gaining varsity experience, the Eagles are soaring

toward one possible destination: Titletown.

“We’re looking forward to the new league because we’ll be able to

compete for the league title,” Carpenter said. “We have 16 swimmers

compared to 11 last year. There are eight freshmen. That’s probably the

most freshmen we’ve had since 15 years ago.”

Paul Collier, Anthony Herman, Kris Hartwell, Nathan Marsteller, Greg

Johnson, David Silva and Stephen Tow bring a most wanted challenge for

Carpenter. The Estancia coach will get to develop the eight young

swimmers, as they are eager to improve.

“Even though they are younger kids, they have no fear,” Carpenter

said.

Seniors Phil Westfall and Jon Reddoch supply leadership for the

Eagles, who won one PCL dual meet last year against crosstown rival Costa

Mesa.

The Eagles lost their season-opening meet, 96-45, to host Garden

Grove, but Brian Monette, Frank Gamboa and David Teixeira earned

first-place honors in the nonleague contest last week.

Monette won the 50-yard freestyle (24.98) and took third in the 100

freestyle (57.35).

Gamboa was second in the 200 individual medley (2:32.71) before

touching the wall first in the 500 free (5:56.16). Teixeira finished

first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.31).
