Boys golf preview: CdM: To repeat or not to repeat

CORONA DEL MAR - The 2001 season is all about meeting expectations

for the Corona del Mar High boys golf team. But, just what are the

expectations when the Sea Kings bring a young squad to defend its Pacific

Coast League co-championship?

“It’s going to be an interesting season,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather

said. “They need some seasoning behind them. They need the heat of the

battle. They all have the skills. You just don’t know what you’re going

to get sometimes. Golf is so difficult and it’s so mental.”

Led by senior John Kwon, who finished second in the PCL Finals last

year, the Sea Kings are expected to contend, Starkweather said carefully.

“We’ll be very serious contenders,” the Sea Kings’ coach said. “I’m

not going to stand up and say we’re going to win league, we have too

young of a team. We’ll be competitive.”

Junior Joe Kwon as well as sophomores Brad Chamberlin, Tim Frohling

and Nick Sherman, headline a team averaging 197 over nine holes as it

begins league competition.

Senior Blake Mancillas, who played for the Sea Kings’ basketball team,

adds his hard work to the mix.

Junior Jason Wishengrad, sophomores Mike Walecka and Ryan Lynch, as

well as freshmen Alex Chikovani, Robert Ury, Colby Hackett, Billy

Bettingen and Zack Davenport, bring much hope to the CdM program as

Starkweather is excited about the present, but more anxious for the

future.

“All these guys are so close (in competition),” Starkweather said.

“I’m not quite sure who’s going to step up. They’re good right now. And,

they’re going to be a team to reckoned with. But, they could be shooting

lights out pretty soon.”

CdM’s biggest victory thus far was a 197-202 win over Aliso Niguel,

ranked No. 8 in Orange County at the time. Chamberlin stepped up with 38

on the last nine holes and Frohling shot 39 to lead the Sea Kings to

their best score of the season.
