Boys and girls swim: Estancia boys, Mesa girls win crosstown PCL

COSTA MESA - The Estancia High boys and Costa Mesa girls each

earned Pacific Coast League-opening victories when the crosstown rivals

squared off Wednesday at the Estancia pool.

The Estancia boys earned an 83-63 triumph, while the Mesa girls

prevailed, 118-49.

Coach John Carpenter’s Estancia boys squad was paced by junior David

Monette, who won the 50-yard freestyle (24.3), the 100 free (58.19) and

contributed to the winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.

Senior Phil Westfall was also on those winning relays and topped the

field in the 200 free (2:10.05).

David Teixeira (100 butterfly), Frank Gamboa (500 free) and Tai Thai

(100 backstroke) were additional individual winners for the Eagles (1-1,

1-0 in league). Teixeira and Gamboa were also on the Eagles winning

relays.

Costa Mesa’s boys were paced by senior Mike Whitman, who won the 200

individual medley (2:14.46), the 100 breaststroke (1:09.52) and was on

the winning 400 free relay quartet.

Costa Mesa girls won all but one individual event and swept the relays

to improve to 4-0, 1-0 in league.

Seniors Erin Bayes and Jody Martinovich won a pair of individual races

each, and also aided two winning relays.

Bayes captured the 50 free (25.56) and the 100 free (56.72) and

Martinovich topped the field in the 200 IM (2:22.86) and the 500 free

(5:43.21).

Wendy Martinovich (100 breaststroke), Frances Assal (100 butterfly)

and Sarah Douglas (100 backstroke) were also individual event winners for

the Mustangs, who also received strong contributions from Megan Devey,

Shirley Peng and Candice Carpenter.

Jennifer Cassity 2:17.01 in the 200 free) was the lone event winner

for the Eagles (0-2, 0-1).
