More than 400 volunteers have signed up for Costa Mesa’s Neighbors for
Neighbors program, a community cleanup event scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to
noon April 28.
But still more volunteers are needed to help clean up a park, said
Kimberly Thomas, the city’s management analyst for housing and community
development.
Most of the volunteers who have signed up will help low-income
homeowners to clean, paint and fix their properties.
Five homes have already been identified for improvement, and city
staff are hoping to add one more home to the list.
The addresses were not disclosed, but Thomas said they will be
released next month.
It is taking city staff longer than expected to gather the six houses
because the exteriors must be tested for lead-based paint, according to a
newly implemented state regulation.
The city wants to be sure it does not expose volunteers to the risk of
being in contact with such paint, Thomas said.
Cash and food donations are still needed for the event, Thomas said.
