Prep track and field: Tars sweep Oilers

HUNTINGTON BEACH - The Newport Harbor High boys and girls track and

field teams completed the nonleague portion of their schedule 4-0, after

both handled host Huntington Beach Thursday.

Newport’s Dede Johnson, Jesus Santana and John Peschelt each won two

individual events to lead the boys team to an 85-35 triumph.

Harbor senior Amber Steen won the 800 meters, the 1,600 and the 3,200

to key the Tars’ 76-59 girls victory, which also included a pair of wins

by senior sprinter Patty Vasquez.

Johnson won the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.3) and was on the winnng 400

and 1,600 relays, while Santana topped the field in the 1,600 (4:41.9)

and 3,200 (10:04).

Peschelt, a senior, won the 800 (2:03.2), the high jump (6-0) and was

on the winning 1,600 relay.

Other event winners for the Harbor boys were Sean Tupy (110 high

hurdles), Dan Moyer (300 hurdles), David Sprenger (long jump) and Morgan

Curtis (triple jump).

Vasquez earned what Coach Eric Twiet called her first varsity wins in

the 100 (13.2) and 200 (27.4), while freshman Elizabeth Clayton (15-6 1/2

in the long jump) and Evita Castillo (32-8 3/4 in the triple jump) were

also winners for Newport.
