Jabberwalkies, Xtreme win titles

Two Fountain Valley National Junior Basketball teams, the

Jabberwalkies and Xtreme, won division championships last weekend.

DIVISION I

Jabberwalkies 69, San Bernardino 46

Holding a precarious 22-21 lead at the half, the Jabberwalkies turned

on the defense during a 17-2 run in the third quarter and never looked

back. Matt Derocili led all scorers with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chris

Debowski added 14 points, four steals and seven assists, Jeff Millard,

Taylor Grosso and Sean Gates were outstanding on defense and also

combined for 24 points and 23 rebounds. Guards Tyler Killian and Ryan

Stehle contributed nine points and four steals. On their way to the

title, the Jabberwalkies also defeated West Huntington Beach, 61-34. In

that game Debowski scored 18 points, Derocili had 13, Millard 12 and

Grosso had 12 rebounds.

DIVISION II

FV Barons 37, Aliso Viejo 33

The Barons wrapped up third place in the division behind 19 points

from Stuart Schultz, 10 points by Ricky Rea and 15 rebounds by Matt

Randol.

DIVISION III

North HB 45, FV Lakers 43

Despite playing the final 1 1/2 quarters with only four players, the

Lakers (8-5) still managed to push North Huntington Beach to overtime

before falling. The Lakers were led by Ray Strazzulla who scored 14

points and had six steals, Ryan Sharpe scored nine points, with 10

rebounds and three steals, Tsubasa Furukawa had eight points, 11 rebounds

and five steals and Mitchell Saafeld had eight points, seven rebounds,

and five steals.

HB Oilers 31, Villa Park 30 Tanner Phillips hit two free throws with six seconds left as the

Oilers (9-4) ended their season on a winning note. Keith DeLawder led the

Oilers with 11 points, Trevor Springman had seven rebounds and Matt

Deaner, Harry Dobrott, Daniel O’Keefe, Wrede Cockerill and Colin

Sedwick-Dunlap also contributed to the victory.

GIRLS

DIVISION II

FV Xtreme, Ontario (FV Xtreme wins by forfeit)

FV Xtreme 21, Capo-Dana 18

Coach Rick Hagen’s traveling FV Xtreme squad capped a four-game

winning streak, which included two wins on Sunday, by holding off

Capo-Dana in the semifinals, and being awarded a forfeit victory against

Ontario in the final.

“This was an awesome experience, from beginning to end,” said Hagen of

his squad, comprised of first year players. It was also Hagen’s first

year coaching a girls’ team. “The girls made this a special season.”

Brittany Hagen scored seven points, Kim Hernandez added six points,

Shannon Sueda, Cassie Johnson, Whitney Nelson and Caitlyn Mayer also

scored. Samantha Fedele and Katie Forester also had a hand in the title

run.

Tustin 40, West HB Shooting Stars 28

The West Huntington Beach Shooting Stars ended championship series

play with a 1-2 record, and finished the season 4-6 overall. Libby

DuFresne and Courtney Gillespie each scored 12 points and Andrea

Ostrowski added four.

DIVISION I

FV Hotshots 38, El Modena Hills 33

Crystal Perez poured in a game-high 28 points and also had eight

rebounds to lead the FV Hotshots. Teammates Kimberly Rhoten, Amanda Cecil

and Mirada Baker closed out the scoring with four points apiece. Rhoten

and Cecil each had eight rebounds and Cecil also had six steals.
