Girls swimming: Sea Kings edge El Toro

CORONA DEL MAR - The Corona del Mar High girls swim team used a
strong run from the 400-yard freestyle team to squea past visiting El
Toro, 92-84, in nonleague action Wednesday.
“This was the first time in quite some time we’ve beaten El Toro in
girls swimming, so we’re pretty happy,” CdM Coach Doug Volding said.
“They’re always one of the top teams in Orange County, so we’re excited
to come out on top.”
Lauren Powers and Kim McKay were each strong in the pool for the Sea
Kings (1-1).
Powers won 200-yard individual medley (2:17.21) and 50 freestyle
(25.42), while McKay took first in the 100 free (55.89) and placed second
in the 100 backstroke (1:04.58).
The duo also teamed up in the victorious 400 free relay team, which
won the meet for CdM. Powers and McKay were joined by Brittany Bowlus and
Vivian Liao for a winning time of 3:49.44.
McKay, Powers, Liao and Jackie McCoy helped the Sea Kings win the 200
medley relay with a 1:56.21.
Also posting victories for CdM was Jessica Fries in the 200 free
(2:08.99) and Nikola Hendrickson in the 100 butterfly (1:05.95).
The 200 free relay foursome of Bowlus, Jackie McCoy, Heather Hapeman,
and Hailey Sheetz won with a time of 1:46.59.
El Toro times were unavailable.
The Sea Kings open Pacific Coast League competition on Wednesday at
Laguna Beach, beginning at 3 p.m
