High School Softball: Mesa rallies for the win

COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High sophomore Ann Marie Topps smacked a
two-run homer on the first pitch with one out in the seventh inning to
give the Mustangs’ softball team a 7-5 nonleague victory over visiting La
Quinta Tuesday.
Down 5-0 after two innings, the Mustangs (5-1-1) came back as Topps
went 2 for 4 with four RBIs.
Mustang pitchers, Tess Lindsay and Alle Gallardo, held La Quinta (3-3)
scoreless in six innings, yielding five hits.

Sailors fall, 5-2
NEWPORT BEACH - Visiting Northwood scored three runs in the eighth
inning to pull out a 5-2 nonleague girls softball decision at Newport
Harbor Tuesday.
The Sailors (3-2-1) were paced by the pitching of Kim Moore, who
struck out two and walked five, giving up seven hits.
Defensive standouts were Athena Vasquez at shortstop with a great
leaping grab of a line drive, and catcher Lisa Huntington, with a double
play, catching a pop fly and throwing the runner out trying to get back.
Allison Lewis got the win, striking out 13 with a no-hit effort. The
Sailors struck for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings with the
help of four walks and a hit-batter.
