The Costa Mesa High baseball team comes back to claim a 10-7 victory
over crosstown rival Estancia. The Eagles’ Jeff Troxel rips a three-run
double to cap a five-run sixth inning. But, the Mustangs answer with a
pair of runs in the seventh to tie the game and four more in the eighth
for the win. Mesa’s Matt Broesamle is 3 for 5 with five RBIs, including a
two-run homer in the eighth.
The Newport Harbor baseball team rallies for an 8-4 nonleague victory
over host Laguna Beach. Protecting a 5-4 edge after five innings, the
Tars score three runs in the sixth when Nick Lewis, Paul Jones and
Garrett Nuzum lash singles. Nuzum and Jason Szolomayer, who doubles,
drive in the runs. Harbor’s Joe Urban strikes out five batters in the
final three innings of the game, which ends after six because of
darkness.
Corona del Mar’s Hayden Aley records eight strikeouts and yields three
hits to lead the Sea Kings’ softball team past Laguna Beach, 3-0. CdM
scores all three runs in the fourth inning, when Erica Greene belts a
two-run single and Erica Zoelle later scores on a fielder’s choice.
The Southern California College (now Vanguard University) baseball
team breaks out of a five-game slump, punishing host Whittier, 19-1, in a
nonconference matchup. Costa Mesa High product Matt Harber picks up his
first win of the season as he allows one run in seven innings. SCC
collects 20 hits, 19 of which are singles. Kevin Doyle, who finishes with
the only double, goes 3 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs.
The Corona del Mar baseball team loses a pitcher’s duel, 2-1, to
Woodbridge. Sea King senior left-hander Chad Johnson allows four hits
while striking out eight. CdM shortstop Chris Carey ties the game in the
third, when a wild pickoff attempt leads to his score.
The Estancia High boys basketball team wins the CIF State Division III
championship, March 16, with an 82-72 victory over Washington High of
Fremont at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. Estancia guard Mike Haas finishes
with a game-high 27 points and is instrumental in a key first-quarter
scoring run. Coach Tim O’Brien’s Eagles, down, 3-0, outscore Washington,
17-0, as Son Ly (12 points), and Paul McDaniels (six) knock down
three-point bombs to begin the binge. Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer scores
16 points.
The Newport Harbor baseball team wins its league opener, 13-6, over
host Woodbridge. The Sailors score four times in the second inning,
featuring junior shortstop Chris Carden’s RBI triple.
Harbor’s Aaron McKown opens the fourth with a double and scores on
Matt Stewart’s double, then Carden (2 for 3) drives in Stewart.
The Estancia baseball team notches a 2-0 league-opening victory over
host Laguna Beach. Eagles Chris Watson and Colby French combine on a
four-hit shutout. Watson works the first five innings, yielding three
hits and one walk, while fanning six. French earns his second save of the
season by allowing one hit in two innings.
Estancia’s softball team explodes for 10 runs in the sixth inning to
turn a modest runaway into a 19-1 rout over visiting Corona del Mar.
Eagles Leah Braatz and Patrice Lumpkin are each 3 for 5. Braatz, a
sophomore, belts a three-run homer. Estancia’s 19-hit attack also
includes an RBI double by Veronica Garcia.
Newport Harbor freshman Jenny Colclasure tosses a two-hitter and
strikes out eight to lead the Sailors’ softball team to a 9-1 victory
over visiting Santa Ana Valley. She also goes 2 for 4 with four RBIs.
Newport shortstop Ali Barry goes 3 for 4, scoring three runs and
collecting two RBIs.
