White to coach South

Edison High Coach Dave White, a Newport Coast resident and former
Orange Coast College quarterback, will coach the South in the 42nd
edition of the Orange County All-Star Football Game, scheduled July 13 at
Orange Coast College.
White, who has already represented Edison High as a player and a head
coach in the annual summer showcase, was announced as South coach at the
Orange County Newsmakers Luncheon Tuesday at the Arrowhead Pond.
White, 104-58-2 in 15 years as head coach at his alma mater, led the
Chargers to a 9-3 campaign that ended in the CIF Southern Section
Division I quarterfinals last fall.
A former standout quarterback for Coach Bill Workman at Edison, White
then led OCC to a national championship in 1975, before completing his
collegiate career at Oregon State.
He played for the South in the 1974 Orange County All-Star Game, a
15-12 North victory, then coached the Rebels to a 22-9 victory in 1990.
“Looking back to my playing days, this game was one of the most
exciting times I had,” White said. “Then, coaching it 11 years ago was a
blast, also. I feel fortunate to get another shot at coaching this game.
I’ve won one and I’ve lost one, so I guess this is the rubber match.”
Fullerton High head man Julian Smilowitz will coach the North.
