The Estancia High girls basketball team begins its attempted quest to
The Pyramid with a 64-52 victory over Rosary. Junior Vivi Rodriguez hits
eight of her first nine field goal attempts en route to a career-high 24
points. The Eagles later lose in the CIF Southern Section playoffs to San
Dimas, 70-54, as Estancia Coach Russ Davis is ejected after three
technical fouls.
The Newport Harbor girls basketball team uses a suffocating defense to
choke the life out of host Sonora for a 51-31 victory in the first round
of the CIF Division III-AA playoffs. Sonora scores only seven points in
the first half on 3 of 24 shooting. Colleen Eadie finishes with 10
points, five assists and three steals. Breanna Badorek scores 11 points.
The Sailors’ season ends in the second round as Harbor loses, 81-76, in
overtime to No. 1-seeded Moorpark, a 23-0 team. M.E. Clayton leads the
Tars with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Newport Harbor’s goalie, Zack Wells, comes up with a big save to
secure a 1-0 victory over Riverside Poly in the second round of the CIF
Division III playoffs. Wells, a freshman, cradles a low, skipping penalty
shot with 30 seconds remaining to push the Tars into the quarterfinals.
The win gives Harbor its winningest season the school’s history, 20-5-4.
With 15 minutes remaining, Garrett Jansma finishes Justin Kerr’s pass for
what proved to be the gamewinner.
The Orange Coast College baseball team begins the season, 12-0. The
Pirates win two tournaments as six starters own a batting average of .300
or higher. Adam Cancelliere leads the way with a .422 average. Travis
Cutter hits at .400. Deric Yanigasawa has 10 RBIs with one home run.
Left-handed pitchers Jason Surdock and Jason Liuzzi.
The Corona del Mar boys basketball team’s season comes to an end after
a 68-50 loss to visiting San Dimas in the quarterfinals of the CIF
Division III-A playoffs. Brian Coleman leads the Sea Kings with 19 points
and Adam Klinke scores 11. Darren MacDonald finishes with 10 points and
13 rebounds.
Looking back, 10 years ago this week ...
The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team claims revenge after a 2-1
victory over La Canada in the CIF Southern Section Division I-A
quarterfinals. The Sea Kings lose to La Canada in the previous year’s
playoffs. CdM’s Tanner Rupp breaks a 1-1 tie late in the second half. The
win sets up a semifinal matchup against Back Bay rival Newport Harbor the
following week. The Sea Kings reel off a 4-0 victory in the second round
as Rupp, Dan Soucek, Scott Owen and Jason Boyce score one goal each.
The Newport Harbor boys soccer team dominates Workman in a 2-1 victory
in the Division I-A quarterfinals. The Sailors go up 2-0 when Chris
Hunter scores in the 17th minute and Branon Coluccio puts one in midway
through the second half. Jarrett Prott assists on Coluccio’s goal.
Earlier in the week, the Sailors edge past Barstow, 1-0. With eight
minutes remaining before halftime, Todd Tift scores on a direct free kick
from just beyond midfield.
The Estancia girls soccer team advances to the CIF quarterfinals after
a 2-1 victory over Redlands in the Division III-A playoffs. Junior
forward Danielle Straub scores in the fourth minute of the second
sudden-death overtime period. The win produces the school’s first CIF
quarterfinal berth. First-year Coach Frank Renn guides the Eagles to a
17-2-4 season after just three wins in the previous season.
The Estancia boys basketball team smashes Foothill in a 70-58 victory
in the CIF Division III-AA semifinals. Coach Tim O’Brien’s Eagles build a
25-7 lead in the first quarter. Son Ly scores a team-high 15 points,
while Matt Fuerbringer (14 points), Paul McDaniles (14) and Mike Haas
(13) also finish in double figures.
The Estancia girls basketball team uses a second-half surge to earn a
71-39 victory over Magnolia in the Division III-AA quarterfinals. Coach
Lisa McNamee’s Eagles open the second half with a 21-2 run to increase a
12-point halftime. Robin Cordrey finishes with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Patrice Lumpkin also earns a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Melody Earle has 11 points and dishes out eight assists. And,
Monique Sweet scores 13.
