Boys soccer: Sailors stun Woodbridge, 1-0
IRVINE - The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team extended its
unbeaten streak to four games Wednesday as senior Trey Meek scored the
lone goal in a 1-0 Sea View League blanking of host Woodbridge at Alton
Park.
Meek stole the ball from a Warrior fullback in the 45th minute,
maneuvered around goalie Adam Hahn (six saves), who came out and slid,
knocking Meek temporarily off balance. Meek recovered, then slid a shot
past another converging defender, and senior goalie Duke Burchell made it
stand up.
Burchell, like Meek a returning All-Sea View performer, collected 10
saves, including a handful of supreme efforts, to help the Tars improve
to 3-3-4, 1-0-1 in league.
“Duke was sensational, the best player on the field,” Newport Coach
Matty West said. “If you didn’t see some of his saves, you wouldn’t have
believed them.”
West also credited midfielders Kevin Campos and Tyler Simmons, as well
as defenders Juan Gonzalez and Jeremy Bruce for helping contain the
Warriors (13-4-2, 0-2-0) ranked No. 5 in Orange County.
Harbor, which gets a bye in the league schedule Friday.
Woodbridge, ranked No. 5 in Orange County, fell to 13-4-2.
