The surf will meet the turf this summer in Huntington Beach when the
first Surf & Turk Gold Tournament is held at Meadowlark Golf Course.
The event, scheduled for July 27, will bring together the worlds of
surfing and golf as amateur and professionals from the surfing industry
take part in the shotgun tournament.
So far, 23 surfers have committed to the tournament, event director
Jeff Wermuth said Tuesday.
“We’ll have a sold-out field of 144 golfers,” Wermuth said. “It should
be a very exciting event, and I’m looking to make this an annual event
for the next 10 years, and make it the biggest way for the surfing
industry to give back to the community. This tournament will benefit
charity.”
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Wipeout Program at Hoag
Hospital, as well as the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
A scramble event will be held for amateurs, while individual scores
for professional surfers, Wermuth said, will be combined with the scores
they receive at the U.S. Open of Surfing, which will be held July 28, to
determine an overall champion.
A minimum $5,000 prize purse will be awarded to the professionals
competing, while an amateur prize purse is still to be determined.
Wermuth said he is working to bring professional surfers Kelly Slater
and Sunny Garcia, ranked No. 1 in the world, to the event.
