Pedestrian fatally hit by car

A car struck and killed a pedestrian Thursday evening at a Corona del

Mar intersection, police said.

At about 7 p.m., Juvencio Rubalcava, 31, of Costa Mesa struck and

killed a homeless man near the corner of Poppy Avenue and East Coast

Highway, said Newport Beach Police Lt. Mike Jackson. Rubalcava was on his

way to deliver a pizza.

Rubalcava was not driving recklessly and was so distraught by the

incident a police chaplain was called in after police finished

questioning him, Jackson said.

Coroner’s investigators were still trying to identify the victim late

Thursday. He was not carrying identification when he was killed, police

said.
