POLICE BRIEFS

Huntington Beach marine safety officers dragged a woman out of the

ocean Monday after she had plummeted 35 feet off the end of the

Huntington Beach Pier.

At about 8:52 a.m., Marine Safety Officer Todd Bartlett first spotted

the unidentified woman floating at the end of the pier from a pier-side

lifeguard tower and noticed people running to his location. Although he

and Officer Eric Shing retrieved the woman, it is unknown how long she

was in the ocean.

The woman, between 40 and 50 years old, was found conscious but

lethargic, and was floating on her back fully clothed, said officials

with the city’s Marine Safety Division.

“She was still wearing shoes and even her glasses, and we don’t know

whether she actually jumped or fell,” said Lt. Steve Davidson, spokesman

for the division. “There were no witnesses that we could find.”

Division officials said without witnesses who saw the woman enter the

water firsthand, it will be difficult to learn how she got there, though

they believe and accidental fall is unlikely.

“There’s a railing at the end of the pier to prevent falls, and this

type of thing happens at least once a year,” Davidson said. “During the

holiday season, people sometimes get despondent and that’s the largest

leap we have at the pier.”

The woman did not appear to suffer any major injuries from the fall,

but was unresponsive to medics who questioned her. She was taken to the

UC Irvine Medical Center and treated for possible hypothermia.

Police arrest burglary suspect

Fountain Valley police arrested James Edward Tischler, 48, on Tuesday

on suspicion of commercial burglary.

On Oct. 13, police alleged that Tischler broke into Valtone Cleaners

at 8868 Warner Ave.

At the time of the incident, Valtone Cleaners was closed and the

suspect allegedly entered the building by smashing a glass window. Police

said nothing was taken from the cleaners.

Tischler, who is also wanted in connection with similar incidents in

Garden Grove and La Habra, was booked and held in Orange County jail on

$100,000 bail.
