ANAHEIM - The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team lost to Trabuco
Hills, 59-51, Saturday in the consolation finals of the Loara Tournament.
Senior Mike Payne led the Mustangs (2-2) with 14 points, while Steve
Whittaker added 11 and Chad Vakili had 10.
“Trabuco Hills is a very good team,” Mesa Coach Bob Serven said. “In
fact, there was a lot of good teams in this tournament. We would have
liked to have won the consolation round, but considering how young we
are, we played pretty well.”
The Mustangs hung tough with the Mustangs until Payne was hit with his
fourth foul mid way through the third quarter.
“He’s our only big guy and not having him in the lineup changes our
offensive approach,” Serven said.
Costa Mesa will play at Saddleback on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in
nonleague action.
