Boys basketball: Mustangs shoot the lights out

ANAHEIM - The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team exploded for a

34-point third quarter en route to a 86-66 win over El Modena in

consolation action at the Loara Tournament Thursday.

“We’re still a very young team and we’re still finding our style of

play,” Mesa Coach Bob Serven said. “We had a very good shooting night.

We’re not going to have too many 34-point quarters like we did tonight,

but overall, it was a pretty good second game.”

Junior Chad Vakili scored 21 points, including five three-pointers.

The junior guard also pulled down four rebounds and dished out four

assists.

“Once he gets bigger and stronger, he’s going to be one heck of a

player,” Serven said of the 5-foot-11 shooter. “He’s got the range. Some

of his three-pointers were bombs.”

Senior center Steve Payne had 16 points, David Conte added 12 and

Steve Whittaker chipped in with 11 for Costa Mesa (1-1).

Mesa outscored the Vanguards, 34-16, in the third quarter, turning an

eight-point lead into a comfortable advantage.

“We had a high-scoring first quarter, but we allowed too many points,”

Serven said. “We did a better job of defense in the second and third

quarters.”

The Mustangs will play Troy today at 4:50 p.m. at Loara High in

consolation action.
