In brief
Newport Beach city officials are asking residents to avoid Dover Drive
until Monday and to use 17th Street and Newport Boulevard instead.
The city’s main transmission line broke Wednesday evening and flooded
Dover Drive, city officials said, and workers must remove the street’s
pavement, restore the base and repave the street.
Don Webb, the city’s director of public works, said the pipeline would
be repaired by Thursday night, but it would take the weekend to fix the
street.
Dover Drive’s southbound lane will remain closed to traffic until
Monday afternoon, Webb said. Only one lane will be open on the street’s
northbound side.
Webb added that Thursday morning traffic backed up for about half a
mile. He encouraged residents to use an alternate route to avoid major
traffic jams.
