After several years of close calls and near-upsets, Edison High

finally pulled off a stunner against Los Alamitos, beating the Griffins

last week to take an early first-place share of the Sunset League with

Esperanza ...

It was Edison’s first victory over Los Alamitos since the Griffins

joined the Sunset League in 1994, and the Chargers’ first win in the

all-time series since 1974 ...

The Chargers did it with defense, too. They whitewashed Los Al in the

second half, holding the Griffins to their lowest point total of the

season ...

With Edison’s victory, Huntington Beach stands alone as the only

Sunset League team yet to defeat Los Alamitos in league play ...

Edison has dominated its series with Marina in the past, but enters

this week’s contest a loser to two straight to the Vikings ...

Ocean View takes a break from Golden West League play Saturday to take

on Garden Grove. The Seahawks have surrendered 110 points in their last

two games after allowing just 46 in their first five ...

Garden Grove started the season 0-3-1, but the Argonauts have won

three straight. Chalk it up to a revitalized offense and an improved

defense. The Argos were shut out in three of their first four games ...

The two teams have common opponents in Westminster and Pacifica. Ocean

View dropped a 17-14 decision to Pacifica, and fell to Westminster last

week, 29-14. Garden Grove was blanked by Pacifica, 42-0, and battled

Westminster to a scoreless tie ...

Huntington Beach celebrates homecoming Friday against Esperanza, but

Temitope Sonuyi could very well crash the party. The Aztec running back

is the county’s leading rusher, inflicting weekly ground assaults on

various opponents. With three regular-season games remaining, Sonuyi

needs 352 yards to reach the 2,000-yard plateau ...

Obviously, the Oilers must contain Sonuyi if they hope to win. But

they also must contend with Aztec defensive end/tight end Alex deBrucky.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior demoralized Marina last week with a pair

of fumble recoveries and three sacks -- one of which sent Viking

quarterback Beau Brown to the sidelines with a shoulder injury ...

Oiler offensive/defensive lineman Russell Chemberlen has nine sacks

this season...

Fountain Valley will call Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium home

the next two weeks, but the Barons won’t be entertaining friendly guests.

First up is Friday’s matchup against Los Alamitos, then comes the big

showdown with Edison on Nov. 3 ...

Because of injuries, Fountain Valley may be playing short-handed

against the Griffins. Chad Triplett (shoulder), Eric Young (shoulder),

and Joey Flores (back) are all questionable...
