Mesa View, Marine View volleyball winners
Mesa View Middle School won both tournaments in girls’ play, and
Marine View swept the boys’ competition last weekend at the Ocean View
School District 7/8 Volleyball Tournament held at Ocean View High.
SEVENTH-GRADE GIRLS
Mesa View, which finished with a 2-4 record in the regular season
standings, defeated Springview, 13-15, 15-10, 15-5, in the tournament
final. Sarah Theopolis and Janae Guite served well, and setter Leia
Vickery had 10 assists for Coach Sandra Elizondo’s Mesa View squad, which
reached the final by defeating co-champion Vista View, 15-11, 15-7.
Springview also went 2-4 during the regular season, but defeated
regular season co-champion Marine View in a semifinal match, 15-10, 15-6.
SEVENTH-GRADE BOYS
Marine View, which went undefeated (6-0) during the regular season,
also won the postseason tournament by rallying past second-place Mesa
View, 8-15, 15-6, 15-12. Coach Kelly Painter’s Mariners bounced back from
their rocky start behind the front-row play of Jeff VanDoornum and Chad
Coffee. Casey Becker’s 12 assist also aided the comeback.
EIGHTH-GRADE GIRLS
Mesa View, which finished in second place in the regular season
standings, upended regular-season champion Vista View in the final,
15-12, 15-10. Outside hitter Hannah Campbell had five kills, Natalie
Myers finished with 11 assists, and middle blocker Katherine Hennes added
three blocks for Coach Annie Wind’s group.
EIGHTH-GRADE BOYS
Marine View won the division tournament by sweeping Vista View, 15-10,
15-12. Tony Guadagnini had four aces, Patrick Killeen had 13 assists, and
Gabe Herrera’s six kills were instrumental in the victory.
Coach Kelly Painter’s team shared the regular season championship with
Vista View and Mesa View.
