THE RACE FOR THE STATE ASSEMBLY -- 67TH DISTRICT
Torus Tammer
Democrat Andy Hilbert is ready to tackle the issues he says are facing
the district and the state Legislature. Hilbert, who once ran an
environmental consulting firm, has also been president and chief
executive of a 40-person engineering firm that he founded.
Hilbert, who lives in La Palma, was the elected membership chairman
for the 67th state Assembly District and was elected president of the
Pacific Energy Assn. He said his background and past experience will
serve him well when it comes time to confront two of the more prodigious
issues facing the state -- the environment and energy deregulation.
“My experience in the energy industry and environmental field will
bring a knowledgeable perspective on the environment and energy
deregulation,” Hilbert said. “I have learned to build consensus among
competing and contentious interests.”On the economic front, Hilbert said
it is time to “stop Sacramento from squeezing Orange County.”
He contends that hundreds of millions of tax dollars that should go to
the people of Orange County are spent outside the county.

ANDY HILBERT ON:
* THE STATE’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES:
“Our vision for the state has to be a 30- to 50-year vision. We must
force ourselves to think long-term in the best interest of all in a
term-limited, special-interest environment.”
Hilbert said the state must work on upgrading sewer, water, energy,
transportation, health-care, housing and education systems, but not
according to short-term political experience or special-interest
influence. He said the planning should be according to a 30-year vision
for the state.
“Our prosperity gives us an opportunity to govern ourselves with
restraint and responsibility, which is only possible if we have a
long-term outlook. Our challenge then, is to not squander our prosperity
with short-term thinking, but to have a long-term vision”
* HIS TOP PRIORITY IF ELECTED
“I will work as an active participant to help resolve the continuing
battles over our area wetlands in the district.”
Hilbert said he will not be passive and will work to bring state
resources to bear on a solution.
“The whole state benefits from our work to preserve our beaches and
wetlands. They make our communities more livable, our environment more
sustainable and attract tourists and students from all over the world.”
