The Vanguard University men’s soccer team will look to keep its
playoff hopes alive with a 3 p.m. Golden State Athletic Conference
contest at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.
The Lions (8-4-1, 5-1-1 in GSAC) are in second place in conference
play, while Westmont (14-3, 5-2), ranked No. 8 in the NAIA polls, remains
close behind.
Vanguard trails second-ranked Azusa Pacific by only one game and with
only two games remaining, every contest is important.
Leading the Lions’ attack has been the play of Diego Goni with 12
goals and four assists. Feeding a majority of Goni’s opportunities has
been Josh McLeish, whose 11 assists rank him among the top in the GSAC.
Next on the Lions’ sniper list is freshman Esaul Mendoza. The Estancia
High product leads the team in shots with 41 and is second among all
Lions with four goals.
Goalie Mathew Resor has played a huge role in the Lions’ success. His
62 saves is near the top of the GSAC rankings, as is his 1.50 goals
against average.
The Lions will close out GSAC play with a home matchup against Fresno
Pacific Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Sunbirds (8-8, 5-2) are also in the thick
of the playoff race and Tuesday’s contest could be the deciding factor
for either school.
