Cross Country: CdM girls take home Mt. SAC title

WALNUT - It seems as if no one can stop the winning ways of the
Corona del Mar girls cross country team.
The Sea Kings added another prestigious title to their season by
winning the Mt. San Antonio Invitational, Friday, in the girls Division
IV sweeptakes race.
Not only did CdM win, but it dominated with 62 points, a 67-point
margin of victory over the next best in a field of 17 schools.
“(The invitational) really went smooth for us,” said CdM coach Bill
Sumner.”We’re right where we’re supposed to be.”
CdM’s Jenny Cummins stopped running after a mile because she suffered
an asthma attack. And the Sea Kings still ran to victory.
Season Meservey led CdM with a ninth place at 19:04.
“Season was only supposed to get us set up,” Sumner said. “But, she
got so far ahead that none of our girls could catch her.”
Katie Quinlan (19:06) came in behind Merservey in 10th, while Diana
Hossfeld (19:18) finished No. 15. Jenny Long was 16th in 19:28. And
Katherine Morse posted a 20:15 run.
“This was a like a tune-up for the state meet,” said Sumner, who
believed his team dominated the invitational.
In the boys Division IV sweepstakes race, Estancia earned second place
honors.
After the race, Sumner said the CdM boys team needs to work on
technique.
Yet, he mentioned his runners finished with strong times considering
the challenge of the Mt. SAC course.
CdM’s Travis Beardslee ran for a 15:33 and Josh Yelsey followed with a
15:53. Dustin Hodges finished at 17:12, while Mark Pomerantz came in at
17:16 and Ben Inouye at 17:37.
