Boys water polo: Sea Kings breeze past Estancia

CORONA DEL MAR - With speed and constant defensive pressure, the

Corona del Mar High boys water polo team remained undefeated in the

Pacific Coast League as the host Sea Kings shut down Estancia, 20-2

Wednesday.

Though CdM easily won, the Eagles actually tied the game 1-1 two

minutes into the game. Estancia’s Phil Westfall scored, but that was all

the Eagles had until Westfall scored again in the final quarter.

Chriss Street, Garrett Bowlus and John Mann scored four goals each for

CdM.

“We didn’t come out that strong,” Mann said. “But we built ourselves

up as the game went along. We came in thinking that we needed to dominate

from the start.”

Mann also said the Sea Kings didn’t approach Estancia with a gameplan.

Rather, CdM came in to play its game, attack, counterattack and defend.

The Sea Kings’ approach also led to goals for John Money, Artie Dorr,

and Bobby Messenger, who all had two scores each. Michael March and

Marcello Pantuliano threw in one apiece.

CdM’s domination impressed Estancia Coach John Carpenter. Yet, he was

also proud of the Eagles play as well.

“A lot of team would love to have a shot at the No. 1 team,” said

Carpenter. “We get that chance. This game gives us a chance play the best

and for us to challenge that. I thought when we would get in our sets, we

played OK. I wasn’t disappointed.”

The Sea Kings’ lead gave younger players an opportunity to get some

game action. Sophomore Ryan Moore played the fourth quarter and grabbed

three steals and assisted all four goals in that quarter.

“We played real well today,” said Moore, who is playfully nicknamed

“Peanut.” “This is a game whree we came out and worked on our skills.”

The Sea Kings will play Servite Monday at 4 p.m. at CdM.
