Coast nicks Fullerton, 10-9
FULLERTON - Orange Coast College’s men’s water polo team recorded
its second straight road upset victory Wednesday, winning, 10-9, at No.
10 Fullerton. The Pirates (9-9, 3-2 in the Orange Empire Conference), won
at No. 6 Mt. San Antonio last Friday.
Wednesday’s victory gives the Pirates control of their own destiny in
the race for third place in the conference.
“We’re definitely playing better right now,” said Coast Coach Jason
Gall. “This is the time of year you want to be playing well.”
Gall said the biggest challenge with the Hornets (11-5, 2-2) Wednesday
was actually the playing site, a pool which is narrow and has a shallow
end. The Pirates spent some time preparing, but still had to adjust
during the game.
“The defenders and the goalie can get a pretty good push off the
bottom in the shallow end,” said Gall. “It’s something we’re not used
to.”
Coast figured it out quckly enough, taking a 6-5 halftime lead. The
Pirates led the entire second half.
Chris Lancellotti led the Pirates with four goals and Jeffery Sample
scored twice. OJ Vazquez, Steve Dugger, Jeffrey Pratt and John Smalley
all had one goal for Coast.
Goalie Graham Harvey had 11 saves for OCC.
