LETTER OF THE WEEK

“Just the facts, Ma’am”’ occurred to me as I read the letter (“Linear

Park sparks some debate among readers,” Oct. 12).

Adrianne Morrison wrote “dedicated environmental groups like the Bolsa

Chica Conservancy.”

Let the record show that the Bolsa Chica Conservancy has on its board

Lucy Dunn, vice president of Koll Development/Hearthside Homes; former

[Huntington Beach] Planning Commissioner Ed Laird; [Huntington Beach]

Mayor Dave Garofalo; and [Huntington Beach] council members Peter Green

and Pam Julien.

Anyone who thinks that with those members the Bolsa Chica Conservancy

qualifies as an environmental group, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Morrison also claims that “the Coastal Commission has been unable to

certify the LCP [Local Coastal Plan] because of litigation” and hence no

park. The real reason there is no park is because the developer,

Koll/Hearthside, is trying to dedicate 49 acres for the park if they can

build on the Bolsa Chica mesa.

The county won’t take the 49 acres until Koll/Hearthside cleans up the

property, and Koll won’t clean it up until they get the permits to build

on the mesa.

She concludes, “We’re looking forward to the Coastal Commission’s

determinative vote in November.”

She’s right about that if the commission stands by its staff

recommendation to save all the Bolsa Chica and properly buffer the

wetlands and archeological sites, then all of Bolsa Chica will be saved

and the Bolsa Chica saga will have a happy ending.
