Huntington Beach High School standout running back Russell Oschman

became the first local player to surpass the 1,000 yards rushing mark

this season. Oschman earned the feat Friday against Edison by rushing for

105 yards, pushing the senior to 1,102 for the season...

Oschman rushed for his 105 yards Friday despite tweaking his right

ankle two minutes into the second quarter and sitting out the remainder

of the period...

Temitope Sonuyi of Esperanza, Marina’s opponent tonight, continues to

lead the county in rushing. The 5-foot-10, 210 senior running back has

rushed for 1,434 yards in six games, and averages 7.8 yards per carry...

Sonuyi’s explosion this season has a lot to do with Esperanza’s

success. He rushed for a county-best 330 yards and five touchdowns last

week in a 41-15 win over Fountain Valley...

Marina’s task will be to slow the speed back, who already has rushed

for more than 200 yards in four of the Aztecs’ first six games...

Sonuyi also tops the county in scoring (108 points)...

Mater Dei, of course, leads the county poll, but the Monarchs are

second to Long Beach Poly in the CIF rankings...

Los Al will be the third ranked Division I opponent for Edison this

season. Previously, the Chargers have faced Mater Dei and Servite, and

posted a 1-1 record against those two. They don’t get to Esperanza until

the final week of the regular season...

Peering into the future: The night of Nov. 3 will be a big one as

Edison and Fountain Valley stage their annual battle for the coveted

“Bell” at Orange Coast College, while over in Placentia, rivals Los Al

and Esperanza will go head to head.
