THE RACE FOR OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL BOARD
Angelique Flores
Pam Ogdon has devoted much of her time to working with school
administrators to create and implement various educational programs,
including ones to help at-risk students.
“I believe that at the district level, I can continue to work
diligently on behalf of these types of programs,” she said.
Ogdon is a full-time homemaker and a community volunteer. She has
worked on local school board and city council campaigns.
During her five years as Parent-Teacher Organization president and
board member, she has worked to ensure that children’s best interests and
needs are being met and that the community offers the best opportunities
for a successful education.
“One of the most important issues facing all school districts is pupil
promotion and retention,” Ogdon said.
Since the law requiring school districts to establish a
promotion-retention policy was passed, the district must work to
implement a fair and equitable policy committed to the academic success
of each student, she said.
“In Ocean View, administrators and teachers must see that multiple
measures of assessment are utilized to determine whether or not a student
has mastered grade-level standards,” Ogdon said. “The district must then
provide intervention strategies to help at-risk students succeed,
including a mandatory summer school program.”
Ogdon earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from UC
Irvine.

PAM OGDON ON:
* THE DISTRICT’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES:
“One of the biggest challenges is to establish the necessary
communication, confidence and trust between the district and the
community.”
Ogdon would also like to structure teacher benefits to attract and
retain the best educators.
“I would like to see further establishment of business partnerships,
continuation of ongoing facility maintenance, upgrades to buildings,
playground facilities and modernization of the school sites.”
* PLANS TO BUILD GYMNASIUMS AT MIDDLE SCHOOLS:
“I understand the concerns of surrounding property owners in regard to
the proposed gymnasiums. I am one of those property owners.”
Ogdon supports the community advisory committee that will serve to
mitigate concerns relate to parking, traffic, building size and facility
usage.
“The gymnasiums would greatly enhance the middle schools by providing
a facility for physical education, assemblies, drama performances and
school promotions. However, I do agree with the request to place a
moratorium on the funding for the gymnasiums and the request for an
environmental study to determine neighborhood impact.”
