THE RACE FOR OCEAN VIEW SCHOOL BOARD

Though she loves her job, Peg Edey calls herself the quiet candidate.

“I’m a very good trustee, but I’m a lousy politician,” she said.

Edey has served as a trustee for the Ocean View School District for

the past four years.

“It’s been my pleasure to serve as a trustee, and I want to continue

to serve and work together,” she said.

The biggest challenge for the district to tackle is one that every

educator must face, Edey said.

“I think the most important issue has always been the same: How do we

give the children we serve the best education we can?” she said.

Edey said that answering that question is difficult, but it’s her duty

as a trustee to search for answers. She said she hopes to find ways to

meet the needs of the students who are each unique individuals, she said.

“The community might elect me in, but it’s the children that I answer

to,” she said.

Besides being a trustee, she’s a mom and a teacher. Edey teaches for

the Meet the Masters program, a professional art curriculum in the

district.

Edey earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts and social science from

San Diego State. She also earned her elementary school teaching

credentials.

Her past political experience includes serving as president of the

superintendent’s round table, president of elementary and middle school

parent-teacher-student associations and PTAs, and as a legislative

representative for the PTA. She has also served on various district

committees, such as the budget advisory committee and the instructional

committee.

* THE DISTRICT’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES

The biggest challenges will be to keep up with the changes and growth

in the district, Edey said.

Edey said the district’s population is becoming increasingly

multiethnic.

“There are 33 different languages spoken in Ocean View, and this

number will continue to grow.”

Technology will also continue to advance and change.

“In order to fully meet these children’s needs, we have to prepare

them for technology in ways that we don’t even know about yet. We have to

keep current with that.”

* PLANS TO BUILD GYMNASIUMS AT MIDDLE SCHOOLS

“I’m very in support of it. We need to fulfill the promise we made to

the middle schools to build them. But it’s a very sensitive issue, and we

need to work together on it.”

Edey recognizes the community’s concerns and hopes to hear from the

community advisory group before moving forward with any other plans.

“It’s not a done deal. We’re going to slow down. We need to come up

with a compromise that will make both sides happy. We don’t want to push

it on the community. It’s all for the kids, and I think it still can

work.”

Edey points out that schools provide the venue for youth sports. The

gyms will improve those venues, as well as augment the district’s

physical education and fine arts programs.

“I hope the two sides will come together with a good compromise.”
