About 20 Orange Coast College dental-assisting students presented an

educational program last week to more than 200 kindergartners and

first-graders at Wilson Elementary School in Costa Mesa. The presenters

are enrolled in OCC’s “Preventive and Community Dentistry” class. The

program included demonstrations, skits and a puppet show. Children were

taught proper techniques for brushing and flossing. Each child in

attendance received a free toothbrush and a dental-care coloring book ...

The board of trustees at Vanguard University of Southern California in

Costa Mesa recently selected Dr. Augustus Cerillo, Jr. as the new

provost/vice president for academic affairs. Cerillo replaced Dr. Murray

Dempster, who assumed duties as university president in July. Cerillo’s

academic and administrative service to Vanguard includes serving as chair

of the department of history and political science; chair of the ad hoc

committee on curriculum review; and special consultant to the university

president regarding extension, graduate and special programs. He has been

an adjunct professor at Vanguard since 1970, as well as a professor of

history at Cal State Long Beach for 33 years. He also taught at

Northwestern University. In the community, Cerillo sits on the Board of

Deacons of the Newport-Mesa Christian Center in Costa Mesa ... Liz

Mancini recently joined the Planning Center as a planner and will be

working primarily with the firm’s governmental service group. Mancini is

active in the preparation of the Riverside County integrated plan and the

comprehensive plan update for the city of Buenaventura. The Planning

Center, in Costa Mesa, is a private consulting firm providing services to

both governmental and private agencies ... John Scull also recently

joined the Planning Center in Costa Mesa. He is an environmental planner

and will by working mostly with the firm’s Environmental Services Group.

His current projects include the City of Industry development plans and

the Alternative Learning Center for the Fontana Unified School District

... The Guardian Angels of Human Options, a nonprofit organization that

helps victims of domestic abuse, raised more than $11,000 at a recent

paddle boat fund-raiser. Karin Lekas and Jamie Wilkinson co-chaired the

event. Bonnie Peterson is president of the group. Denis LaBonge and

Michael Maloney won the paddle boat race.
