It will be a reunion of sorts...

It will be a reunion of sorts tonight when Marina takes on Los

Alamitos at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach...

Mark Rehling, who coached the Vikings for five years, guided them to

their first playoff appearance in six years in 1999, and led them to a

shocking 1997 victory over Los Alamitos, is now a line coach at Los

Alamitos...

Rehling, truly one of coaching’s nice guys, has a history with first

year Marina Coach Mike Dodd: both were teammates at Golden West

College...

The fifth week of the prep season marked the first time that all five

local teams were victorious in the same weekend...

A feat such as that will not happen again this year, seeing as how

four of the five teams will battle one another in the upcoming weeks of

the Sunset League race...

Four Sunset League teams are ranked in the county’s Top Ten list: No.

2 Los Alamitos (5-0); No. 3 Esperanza (4-1); No. 3 Edison (4-1), and

Marina (5-0), which enters the rankings this week at No. 10...

Actually, the CIF Southern Section Division I poll has the Vikings at

No. 8, while Los Al comes in at No. 4, Edison at No. 6, and Esperanza at

No. 8...

Ocean View (4-1) also made its first poll appearance of the season,

popping in at No. 10 in Division VI...

Marina will put its rankings on the line immediately, as it opens up

the Sunset League race like no other team: the Vikings will find out just

where they stand after taking on Los Alamitos, Esperanza, and Edison in

the first three weeks of the league season...

The Vikings defense has not allowed a touchdown in the past two

games...

That could be good news for Marina tonight: Kennedy, Los Al’s opponent

last week, held the Griffins scoreless in the first half, although Los Al

rallied to score a 21-19 win...

Ocean View’s defense had a tremendous nonleague showing as it limited

four of five opponents to nine points or less...

The big test comes tonight at Tustin. Last year, the Tillers rolled up

78 points against the Seahawks. That won’t happen this year...

For the second consecutive game, Ocean View quarterback/free safety

Patrick Campbell returned an interception for a touchdown...

Fountain Valley’s defense also is back. After surrendering 67 points

in consecutive losses, the Barons stop unit put it all together last week

in a 33-0 drubbing of Trabuco Hills...

The Baron defense will need to peak again against an explosive

Esperanza offense, which averages 30 points per game. Fountain Valley has

given up more than 30 points in two games this season...

Esperanza senior running back Temitope Sonuyi is leading the county in

rushing with 1,099 yards...

Despite coming into league play at 3-2, the Barons, who played a

formidable nonleague schedule, will be dangerous in the Sunset race...

Casey Clark did just about everything during Fountain Valley’s win,

throwing for 135 yards and two touchdowns, kicked a pair of field goals,

and also booted an extra point...

Edison High will celebrate homecoming Friday night when the Chargers

host Huntington Beach at Sheue Field...

The Chargers will be without the services of starting defensive

lineman Brent Woods, who dislocated his shoulder during practice last

week.
