TONIGHT’S GAME

Marina vs. Los Alamitos...LA by 3

(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View vs. Tustin...Tustin by 12

(at Tustin High, 7 p.m.)

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Huntington Beach vs. Edison...Edison by 8

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Fountain Valley vs. Esperanza...Aztecs by 2

(at Valencia High, 7 p.m.)

Something will come to pass tonight when Marina (5-0) battles Los

Alamitos (5-0). Both teams have solid running games and formidable

defenses, so this encounter will come down to the passing game, which

favors the Griffins. Marina’s ability to control the ball and the game

clock, and play an error-free game, will go a long way in determining the

Vikings’ success. This game should go down to the wire. Last year’s

score: Los Alamitos 28, Marina 12...

When Surf City rivals Huntington Beach (2-3) and Edison (4-1) hook up

Friday, look for a good rushing matchup between the Oilers’ Russ Oschman

and the Chargers’ Darryl Poston. But, it doesn’t stop there for Edison,

whose passing game, featuring Richard Schwartz and some talented

receivers, will definitely put Huntington’s secondary to the test. That

will be the difference in this game. Last year’s score: Edison 35,

Huntington Beach 14...

Through the years, Fountain Valley (3-2) and Esperanza (4-1) have

played some barnburners, and Friday’s showdown should be no difference.

The question is, though: which Fountain Valley team will show up? The one

that has been involved in some high scoring affairs, or the

defensive-minded group that helped produce a 33-0 road shutout of Trabuco

Hills? If it’s the latter, then the Barons are primed for an upset.

They’ll need to slow an explosive Aztec offense to begin league play 1-0.

Last year’s score: Esperanza 21, Fountain Valley 20...

Remember the Alamo? Heck, remember last October, when Tustin (4-1) did

a number on Ocean View (4-1)? The two teams meet again tonight in a

Golden West League opener, with Ocean View trying to unseat defending

league champion Tustin. The difference between these Seahawks and the

1999 edition has been an improved defense. The Tillers have plenty of

weapons to contend with, however, still are the team to beat, have posted

a pair of shutouts so far, and have never lost to Ocean View. That streak

will continue. Last year’s score: Tustin 78, Ocean View 7.
