OCC men’s and women’s water polo: Pirates to host Riverside today
after competing in tournaments.
Orange Coast College’s women’s water polo team will try to maintain
the momentum it picked up over the weekend. And the men will look to get
back in the win column.
The women (13-2-1) took the championship at the Ventura Tournament
Saturday. And the men finished 12th in a 16-team field at the Citrus
Tournament in Glendora.
The Pirates will host Riverside today with the men’s team going at 3
p.m. and the women following an hour later.
At the Ventura tournament, the women’s team virtually had no trouble
sweeping through the teams Friday and Saturday. The Pirates outscored
opponents 43-10 in four matches to win the championship title.
Neisha Hoagland tallied four goals against Ventura and three more
against Fullerton in the championship final, while Kathy Klarich,
Kristina Miloslavic and Daylene Coberly each had a pair of scores in the
Fullerton game. The Bucs defeated the Hornets, 13-3. The match against
Fullerton, an Orange Empire Conference foe, officially counted as a
nonconference matchup.
Meanwhile the OCC men’s water polo team did not fare as well over the
weekend. The Pirates (7-8) went 1-1 in two matches in the first rounds of
the Citrus Tournament.
“I’m very disappointed with our showing in the tournament,” Coast
Coach Jason Gall said. “We can’t continue to play this way if we want to
remain competitive in our conference.”
