Field hockey: Newport keeps on rolling
HUNTINGTON BEACH - The Newport Harbor High field hockey team made
easy work of host Huntington Beach, defeating the Oilers, 2-0, Tuesday in
Sunset League action.
Sophomore Chanelle Sladics scored both goals for the Sailors (14-1-1,
9-0 in league), while the defense, led by senior Sarah Green, completely
shut down the opposition, allowing no shots on goal.
“It was one of the first games which both sides really came to play,”
Coach Sharon Wolfe said. “It was a nice, all-around game for us.”
Assists on Sladics’ goal came from Elizabeth Evans and Lauren
Birchfield.
Freshman goalie Amanda Wittman will be lost for the season following a
broken leg sustained this past weekend in a club soccer match.
The JV team remained perfect for the season with a 3-0 win over the
Oilers.
Kelly Duffield scored two goals, while Tiffany Vandersloot scored her
first goal of the season for Newport (14-0, 9-0). Assists were from Paige
Marchiorlatti, Carrie Haskell and Caitlin Ferrell.
Newport will host Bonita High Thursday at 3:15 at the Harper Community
Center.
