Peter Bretschger, grandson of former Newport Beach City Councilman

John Store, will attend the National Young Leaders Conference through

Sunday in Washington, D.C. He is a senior at Mater Dei High School and is

currently the Junior Commodore at the Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del

Mar. He works at West Marine in Newport Beach and sings with the World

Class Southern California Children’s Chorus. He was chosen to attend the

conference, which started Tuesday, because of his scholastic achievements

and involvement in a range of high school activities, including speech

and debate, chambers singers, the National Honors Society and the sailing

club. Bretschger hopes to attend USC in the fall. ... The 382

letter-winners who competed on Orange Coast College’s 23 intercollegiate

athletic teams during the 1999-2000 campaign were recently announced to

have distinguished themselves in the classroom, recording a combined

grade-point average of 2.81. OCC began compiling its athletic teams’ GPAs

11 years ago and has seen the overall academic performance inch closer to

its goal of 3.0, said OCC Athletic Director Jane Hilgendorf. This year’s

athletes were enrolled in an average of 12.90 units each during

competitive seasons. Seven of the 23 squads had combined GPAs that topped

3.0. ... Soho Lyn, son of Bernard and Dani Lyn of Newport Beach, recently

received the Underclass Chinese Prize at Suffield Academy, an

independent, coeducational college preparatory school in Suffield, Conn.

Soho is a senior at the academy. ... Turner Development Corporation of

Newport Beach recently announced that Sean A. Sheward, vice president,

has been named a partner of the firm. He has overseen the development of

the company’s successful 50-acre A.J. West Ranch business campus in Lake

Forest, along with more than 650,000 square feet of industrial space.

Sheward joined Turner Development in 1997. He earned his undergraduate

degree in real estate from USC and his master’s degree in business

administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
