CORONA DEL MAR - There’s not a whole lot one can say about Corona

del Mar High’s 72-13 win over visiting Ocean View in a nonleague game on

Saturday except, well, the Sea Kings won.

The statistics in this Armageddon of a game tells the whole story. CdM

was up 21-0 after one quarter, Ocean View committed 49 turnovers and all

nine Sea Kings scored.

After the game, CdM Coach Elbert Davis simply shook his head. At the same

time, he saw one important thing his team took from the game.

“We finally played with intensity and focus,” he said.

Just because Ocean View carried a 1-10 record into the game didn’t mean

CdM (11-4, 1-0) was going to assume 1-11 was definite. The Sea Kings’

defense was ferocious, as evidenced by the 49 turnovers. Andrea Gruber

and Courtney Kawata each had six steals to lead the Sea Kings, while

Jackie McCoy and Charlene Quon had five each.

Ocean View didn’t score until 1:35 into the second quarter. When it

scored seven points in the fourth, it more than doubled the point total

in its previous three quarters.

On the flip side, CdM had no trouble scoring, with all nine players in

the act. Kristin McCoy had the most points with 15, followed by 12 each

from Gruber and Chris Eyre. And when Mijanou Pham hit a layup with 1:58

left in the game, it completed the rotation.

Davis was obviously happy with the win, not because it was by 59 points,

but because of CdM’s tenacity. He was so worried about his team’s effort,

he juggled his starting lineup, keeping McCoy, Eyre and Season Meservey

in, but putting in Pham and Kawata.

“The problem with this team is the mental part,” he said about his team.

“I’m worried about their mindset.”

“We had no intensity in our previous games,” he said. “Against Laguna

Beach, we weren’t focused, and we didn’t come out ready. We were focused

today.”CdM won its Pacific Coast League against the Artists, by the way,

57-22, although Davis pointed out it was only 14-6 after one quarter.

“I tried not telling the girls about Laguna Beach before the game,” he

said, “but they knew about them. They didn’t know about Ocean View

though.”

If CdM doesn’t know about the rest of its opponents, then imagine the

possibilities. Tustin and Estancia, who face the Sea Kings this week,

should rev up their fax machine right now.
