Beverly Hills reigns

NEWPORT BEACH - Beverly Hills High’s girls pushed aside tournament

host Corona del Mar in Saturday’s semifinals, then stunned No. 1-seeded

and previously undefeated (and considered by many unbeatable) Peninsula,

5-4, in the finals of the National High School All-American Tennis

Tournament at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Spurred by the play of freshmen Iris Ichim and Riza Zalameda, the

Normans (15-3 losers to Peninsula a week ago) used the same formula as

they did in rejecting San Diego power Torrey Pines in the second round on

Friday, taking the first four singles and combining Ichim and Zalameda

for a doubles victory for the decider.

Corona del Mar made a run at Beverly Hills in the early going as Kim

Singer defeated Zalameda in singles, 6-1, and Anne Yelsey and Leslie

Damion knocked off Ichim and Irina Shef.

But the Normans bounced back with quality depth to finish off the Sea

Kings.

Thus the unseeded Normans defeated the No. 1 seed (Peninsula), No. 2

seed (Torrey Pines) and No. 3 seed (Corona del Mar) en route to the

championship.

Newport Harbor distinguished itself with an appearance in the

consolation finals, getting past Monta Vista in the semifinal, 5-4, but

falling to Sea View League rival Woodbridge in the final, 5-4.

All-tournament honors went to Peninsula’s Shilpa Joshi, Atherton

Menlo’s Ashley Lipton, Anaheim Canyon’s Tracy Lin, Woodbridge’s Susanna

Lingman, Torrey Pines’ Lauren Perl, Beverly Hills’ Ichim and Corona del

Mar’s Yelsey.
