Steve Bromberg on the issues
Steve Bromberg on:
* MEASURES S AND T
Bromberg said he won’t support either measure.
He initially signed the Measure S initiative, which proposes to put
certain general plan amendments before a citywide vote, but said he
changed his stand after carefully reviewing both measures.
Bromberg said the ultimate goals of Measure S “are the same as mine.
But [the initiative] is not the mechanism to get there.”
He supports improving Newport Beach’s existing traffic phasing
ordinance, saying, “It has deficiencies. Let’s fix them.”
* ORANGE COUNTY AIRPORTS
Extending the flight caps at John Wayne Airport beyond 2005 and
pushing for an airport at the former El Toro Marine Air Corps Station
should be the city’s biggest concerns, Bromberg said.
If the caps are not extended, it will do “more damage to the city than
anyone can imagine,” he said. “If anyone questions that, all they have to
do is visit Playa del Rey.”
Bromberg said the city needs to help educate South County residents
about the facts on an airport at El Toro.
* STATE OF THE BAY
After the airport situation, Bromberg said this is his second burning
issue.
“Right now, the silt in our bay is toxic and the reason that it is
toxic is urban runoff,” he said.
The money and will to dredge the bay are there, Bromberg said, adding
that he hopes to keep working on restoring the bay’s water quality as a
City Council member.
* ANNEXATION PROPOSALS
Bromberg said annexing Santa Ana Heights and Bay Knolls will put the
city in a stronger position to limit flights at John Wayne Airport and
prevent its expansion.
Despite mixed feelings about enlarging the city by adding Newport
Coast, he said “aesthetically, Newport Coast will be a beautiful
addition.”
Bromberg said the city stands to gain financially from annexing the
area.
* CARING FOR SENIORS
The city should move forward on providing affordable housing for its
senior citizens, Bromberg said.
“These folks need our help,” he said. “We should cherish them for as
long as we have them. That’s something I feel very strongly about.”
