NEWPORT BEACH -- Residents can get up close and personal with SWAT
teams, live fires, a helicopter and police dogs this weekend.
The city’s police and fire departments will celebrate their 10th
annual Public Safety Day on Sunday at Newport Center Fire Station No. 3,
at the corner of Jamboree Road and Santa Barbara Drive.
Each year, the day commemorates Fire Prevention Week and brings local
police and fire departments together, said Lt. John Blauer of the Newport
Beach Fire Department.
The event is also an opportunity for residents to get to know their
officers and firefighters.
“They can ask them questions, raise concerns,” he said. “And as for
kids, they get to see that these people are their friends and are there
to help them.”
Public Safety Day will feature tours of the fire and police
departments, firefighting, SWAT, helicopter and K-9 demonstrations, and
information booths from agencies such as the American Red Cross, Harbor
Patrol, Orange County Burn Assn. and Animal Control, among others.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. and demonstrations will start at noon.
Free child identification cards will also be available.
