The Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business and Community
Political Action Committee has endorsed three City Council candidates for
the Nov. 7 election.
The committee’s 12-member board of trustees unanimously chose Gary L.
Proctor for District 2, Steve Bromberg for District 5 and Robert L. Wynn
for District 7.
Although the chamber does not usually endorse candidates on the basis
of a single issue, Proctor was chosen for his passion about limiting
flights at John Wayne Airport and pushing for an airport at El Toro, said
Richard Luehrs, the chamber’s president and chief executive, as well as a
committee trustee.
The committee chose Bromberg because of his experience as a
professional arbitrator and mediator, talents the City Council lacked in
past years, Luehrs added. Wynn made the cut because of his work for the
city during 20 years as city manager, Luehrs said.
All candidates -- except District 5 candidate Robert Schoonmaker, who
declined the opportunity -- were interviewed by the committee.
The committee represents the political side of the chamber, said Doug
Stuckey, a chamber spokesman. The chamber has 1,100 member businesses in
Newport Beach and the surrounding area.
